Debt Settlement
Debt settlement or debt negotiation is a process which involves negotiating with your present creditor or creditors to payoff a part of your existing debts at an agreed upon settlement amount. Debt negotiation and debt settlement are being used by thousands of people to pay back and reduce the amount due with creditors.
In some cases debtors get a letter from creditor directly offering the settlement amount of your balances within a given period. Often, people choose to employ the services of a debt settlement company rather than attempting to do it on their own. Debt settlement companies normally utilize various negotiation strategies to help settle your debts and can eliminate between 40-60% of your original balances.
Debt settlement companies normally contact all your creditors and inform them that you are working with a debt settlement company and that you are now being represented. This is very important in that it helps minimize or eliminate creditor calls. The standard practice is to direct all communication to the debt settlement company that you are working with.
Debt settlement companies will also set up payment plans, similar to a debt consolidation company. You would make monthly payments, and once your balance reached the minimum needed for settlement of an outstanding debt and arrange payment in full.
With debt settlement, you can usually get out of debt with in two to three years and you typically end up paying back between forty to sixty percent of your balances.
During the settlement process, you will make a monthly deposit into a settlement account that will eventually be used for your debt repayment. As funds begin to accumulate in the account, the debt settlement company will start to negotiate with your creditors.
Once a debt settlement offer has been agreed upon, you will need to send that amount, directly from your account, to the creditor. Once the payment has been made, that debt is considered settled in full. You will no longer owe anything on that debt and the account will be closed.
